The ENS App lets you:
register .eth names,
import traditional DNS names,
manage ENS names.
Overview of ENS
ENS replaces complex blockchain addresses with simple names like yourname.eth that you own and control.
The ENS protocol is governed by the ENS DAO. The goals and intentions of the ENS DAO are set out in the ENS DAO Constitution which includes Article 4 β ENS integrates with the global namespace
Article 4 β ENS integrates with the global namespace
In order to facilitate making the most widely usable naming system, ENS aims to integrate with the legacy DNS naming system to the greatest extent possible without sacrificing decentralization of ENS. ENS governance will not enact changes that compromise ENSβs ability to do this.
Examples:
Permissible: ENS governance should grant control of a top-level domain to its owner in the DNS system on request.
Not permissible: ENS governance must not create new top-level domains unless those domains have been granted to ENS by a DNS authority.
Supported Names
ENS supports two types of names/domains:
.eth names: Register these directly in the ENS App to get a name that works across all blockchains.
DNS names: Connect your existing domain (like yoursite.com) to use it as a blockchain address.

DNS Compatibility
Already own a domain? Import it to ENS in minutes: To learn more see: Claim your DNS name onchain in ENS
Managing ENS names
Manage both .eth names and imported DNS names in the ENS App. Your original DNS domain stays with your current registrar - ENS links to your existing ownership.
Imported DNS names do not have ENS registration fees or renewals β only .eth names have yearly costs. Keep your DNS domain active to maintain control of your ENS name. If your DNS domain expires or is transferred, the new DNS owner can reclaim the corresponding ENS name and take control of it.
