Supported Name Types (.eth & DNS TLDs)

The difference between .eth names and DNS domains in ENS, and how to get each.

Updated this week

ENS works with two types of names:

.eth names

Native to ENS. You register them directly in the ENS App and pay annual registration fees. They work across all supported blockchains and apps.

DNS names

Traditional domains like .com, .org, or .xyz can be imported to work as ENS names. You must already own the domain with a DNS registrar β€” ENS doesn't sell DNS domains.

Once imported, your DNS name works like a .eth name. There are no ENS registration fees or renewals for imported DNS names β€” you only pay your DNS registrar.

Important: DNS name ownership

When you import a DNS domain, ENS ownership follows DNS ownership. If your DNS domain expires or transfers to someone else, the new DNS owner can claim control of the corresponding ENS name.

Keep your DNS domain active to maintain control of your ENS name.
