Transfer a name

Hand an ENS name to another wallet from the Ownership tab in ENS Explorer, and decide whether your records travel with it.

Transferring a name hands it to another wallet for good. You do it from the name's Ownership tab in ENS Explorer.

Good to know

Transfer a name

  1. Before the name moves, open the Records tab and change or clear anything you don't want to hand over, such as an address that points at your wallet.

  2. Go to the Ownership tab and select Transfer, at the top right.

  3. In Recipient, enter an ENS name or a wallet address. Check the address it resolves to: a transfer cannot be undone.

  4. Choose whether to Detach the resolver, the contract that holds the name's records. It shows once you enter a recipient and is on by default.

    • On: the name stops resolving once the transfer confirms, and the recipient sets up their own records.

    • Off: the name keeps your records and points at your wallet until the recipient changes them. Until then, it can still be your primary name.

  5. Select Transfer name. A panel lists each transaction, such as Detach resolver and Transfer name.

  6. Select Start, then Open wallet, and approve each transaction. When every step is ticked, select Done.

Once it confirms, the Owner row on the Ownership tab shows the recipient. The history list may not show the transfer straight away.

After the transfer

A transfer moves ownership only: every role on the name stays where it was. If you received a name, check its Roles tab and remove any wallet you don't want there: select the icon at the end of its row, then Remove user, Save, and approve. You need Admin on that role.

Common questions

Why can't I transfer my name?

A name can only move if it carries the Can Transfer role on the name itself, not only on its parent registry. A name you registered yourself always has it; the Roles tab lists it against your address. A name you were given, such as a subname, may not, and no role grant can add it later.

Can I get the name back if I sent it to the wrong address?

Only the wallet you sent it to can send it back. Check the address before you sign.
