Upgrade your name to ENSv2

Upgrade your ENSv1 names to ENSv2. Renewing an upgraded name is a separate second step.

The four slides of the Welcome to the new ENS app! pop-up: CUSTOM PROFILES, TRACK YOUR FAVORITE NAMES, KEEP YOUR NAMES SAFE WITH NOTIFICATIONS, MANAGE EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE

Upgrading moves a name from the old ENS registry (v1) to ENSv2. It is optional and there is no deadline: a name you don't upgrade keeps working, and you can still edit it in ENS Explorer. The name keeps its text records and addresses, and if it is your primary name, it stays your primary name.

What you gain is ENSv2's features, mostly for subnames and roles. On v1 a name has one owner and one manager. On ENSv2 you can give other wallets their own roles, for example to edit all or some records, or to change the resolver.

Which names can upgrade

Names you can upgrade

A .eth name you own that is in active registration, wrapped or not. Its direct subnames come across only if the ENS App can bring all of them. If it can't, it says These subnames can't be preserved yet, and you keep that name on v1 for now.

Names to fix first

  • In its grace period (the window after it expires): renew it first, then upgrade.

  • A subname shows a code in [square brackets]: see Why can't I upgrade my name?

Names that can't upgrade yet

These stay on v1 and keep working, and you can manage them in ENS Explorer.

  • A name held by a Safe multisig. Don't start the upgrade from a Safe yet: support is in progress.

  • A name whose subnames have subnames of their own.

  • A name with wrapped subnames whose permissions can't be kept yet.

  • A name with too many subnames to bring across in one upgrade.

  • A wrapped name with certain permissions revoked: see Why can't I upgrade my name?

Talk to us

Contact support with the name if the ENS App says one of these:

  • no ENSv1 registration was found for it

  • it has no ENSv2 reservation

  • its parent name, or one above it, was upgraded without it

How to upgrade your name

Connect your wallet in the ENS app, pick your names, and approve each request in your wallet.

Note: you need a little ETH for network fees (gas).

  1. Select UPGRADE NAMES. It is on the Welcome to the new ENS app banner at the top of your dashboard and on the pop-up of the same name. After your first upgrade, a You're almost there! card below My Names shows your progress, with a COMPLETE UPGRADE button.

  2. Pick your names. The Your names are ready to upgrade page lists every name you can upgrade, and all of them are ticked at first. To upgrade only some, select Deselect all, then tick the ones you want. Then select the button at the bottom right, for example UPGRADE 1 NAME. To check each request first, select the underlined link beside it. A name with a separate manager has a box under it, Keep 0x… as a manager. What ticking it gives that wallet: What happened to the Manager role?

  3. Approve in your wallet. The app shows each stage as it runs. Approve each request your wallet shows; nothing is approved for you.

  4. Check the result. When Your name has been upgraded! shows, select GO TO DASHBOARD. The name's ENSv1 only badge is gone, and its expiry date is 62 days later.

If a name won't upgrade, or the upgrade stops partway, see Why can't I upgrade my name?

What changes when you upgrade

Upgrading adds 62 days to your registration, once. The grace period drops from 90 days to 28, so the date your name is released stays the same. To add more time, renew as usual.

The name stays with its owner at the time of upgrade. The ENS App uses a smart account (HCA) linked to your wallet to carry out the steps, but it doesn't move the name to another wallet.

The name gets a new token ID, because it becomes a new ENSv2 token. The name itself stays the same. See Why did my name's token ID change?

You can edit the profile of an upgraded name in the ENS App. A name you haven't upgraded still resolves and renews as normal, but its page shows This name can't be edited.

Timeline of a name on v1 and ENSv2: v1 has a 90-day grace period; ENSv2 adds 62 days at upgrade, then a 28-day grace period ending on the same date

Common Questions

How do I check if my name is ENSv1 or ENSv2?

In ENS Explorer, search for the name at explorer.ens.domains. On the name's page, the Protocol row shows ENSv1 or ENSv2.

In the ENS App, a name you haven't upgraded shows an ENSv1 only badge on your dashboard and when you search for a wallet address.

Why did my wallet ask me to approve several times?

The upgrade runs in stages, and each stage is its own request in your wallet, so several requests are normal.

The upgrade is finished when Your name has been upgraded! shows. If it stops before then, see Why can't I upgrade my name?

Can I undo an upgrade?

There is no option in the ENS App to move an upgraded name back to ENSv1, so decide before you start.

My name expires soon. Should I upgrade or renew first?

Renew first to secure your name. There is no deadline to upgrade, so you can upgrade any time after.

What about subnames I got from a project?

A subname from a project, such as a name on an L2, is usually managed by that project, and the project decides how its names upgrade. Ask the project about its plans.
