If an email or message asks you to upgrade your name, don't use its link. Check your name on app.ens.domains.
A name can't upgrade to ENSv2 for a few usual reasons: a wrapped name has certain permissions revoked, a name is in its grace period (the window after it expires), or a subname's parent hasn't upgraded. Most wrapped names have none of these and upgrade as they are, with no need to unwrap.
Wrapped names with a revoked permission
A wrapped name has permission switches called fuses. Burning a fuse revokes a permission for good. A wrapped name can't upgrade if Cannot Transfer is burnt, or if Cannot Approve is burnt and the name has a live approval. The old app showed these as "Cannot send this name" and "Cannot change renewal manager", as in the pictures below.
Cannot Transfer: the name can no longer be transferred.
Cannot Approve: the approved "subname renewal manager" can no longer be updated.
Check your wrapped name's fuses
Open your name in ENS Explorer and select the Fuses tab. Find Cannot Transfer and Cannot Approve in the table. A fuse is burnt when its Burnt column shows True.
If neither fuse is burnt, check the cases below. If none fit, contact support with the name.
A name in its grace period
A name in its grace period can't upgrade. Renew it first to bring it back to active registration, then upgrade as normal.
Why won't my subname upgrade?
A subname can be blocked for one of two different reasons, and only one of them is fixable.
The fixable case: the subname's parent has not upgraded yet. A subname (for example
sub.name.eth, whose parent isname.eth) cannot upgrade ahead of its parent. Upgrade the parent name first, then come back and upgrade the subname. If the subname has already been sent to someone else, the wallet that holds it does that second step — the parent owner cannot upgrade it for them. The permanent case: the subname has had its own permissions revoked. Before that can happen, the parent has to give up control of the subname; the app does this through the "Give up ownership" step. Only then can "Cannot send this name" or "Cannot change renewal manager" be revoked on the subname. Once they are, the subname is locked like any other name, and it cannot upgrade.
Other upgrade problems
My upgrade stopped partway
Open your dashboard: the You're almost there! card below My Names shows your progress. If it keeps failing, contact support with the name and the error you see.
I can't find my name
An upgraded name no longer shows in app.ens.domains, which lists v1 names only. Find it on your dashboard in the ENS App at sepolia.app.ens.domains, or in ENS Explorer. A name you haven't upgraded still shows there under the V1 filter above the list.
Common questions
Can I undo a revoked permission so my name can upgrade?
No. A burnt fuse can't be unburnt, so a name blocked for either reason stays on ENSv1, still working. You manage it in sepolia.explorer.ens.domains.
Can I upgrade if I've lost my Manager wallet?
Yes. The owner wallet starts the upgrade, so the Manager wallet doesn't need to approve anything. To see which wallet is the owner, open the name in ENS Explorer, where Ownership in the sidebar shows Owner and Manager. See What happened to the Manager role?
What happens to a wrapped name's permissions when it upgrades?
A locked wrapped name that can upgrade carries its burnt fuses across to ENSv2 as roles.
