Good to Know
Set a Primary Name to make apps display your ENS name instead of your wallet address. Clear it to stop displaying your ENS name.
You'll need ETH in your wallet to pay gas fees.
Only the wallet set as the ETH Address can set the name as its primary name.
You can only clear the Primary Name from your own wallet.
If you're connected with Manager wallet but not the ETH Address wallet, you'll be prompted to update the ETH Address first, then set the Primary Name in a second transaction.
What is a Primary Name?
A Primary Name links your wallet to your ENS name, so apps display yourname.eth instead of 0x123...abcd. For example, instead of showing 0x123...abcd, compatible applications will display yourname.eth.
How to Set a Primary Name
Step 1. Click Set as Primary Name
Navigate to the ENS App.
Connect your wallet.
Search for your name and open the Profile tab.
Click Set as Primary Name.
Step 2: Update the ETH Address (If Needed)
If your connected wallet is the Manager but not the current ETH Address, you'll be prompted to update it to your own address.
Important: Only proceed if you intend to change the ETH Address. Otherwise, switch to the correct wallet.
Click Start to begin.
Open your wallet and approve the transaction.
Once confirmed, click Next to continue setting the Primary Name.

Step 3: Confirm the Transaction
Click Open Wallet and confirm the transaction.
Your primary name is now set. View it in the ENS APP.

How to Clear a Primary Name
Two ways to clear your Primary Name:
Method 1: Via the ENS App - recommended for most users. Use this if the name still has an ETH Address record set.
Method 2: Via tools.ens.xyz - use this if you're clearing the Primary Name from an old wallet, or if the ETH Address record has already been changed.
A Primary Name stops working when you change the ETH Address to a different wallet, but it's still technically set in the reverse record. Clearing the reverse record is then an option.
Method 1: Clear via the ENS App
Use this method if the name still has an ETH Address set.
Navigate to the ENS App.
Connect your wallet.
Go to Settings.
Click Remove next to your Primary Name.
Read the confirmation message carefully: "This name will no longer appear as the name for this address. However, transactions to this name will still resolve to this address unless you remove the ETH record."
Approve the transaction in your wallet.
Wait for confirmation onchain.

Method 2: Clear via tools.ens.xyz
This method works whether or not the name has an ETH Address set.
Visit tools.ens.xyz/setprimary.
Connect your wallet.
Tick the Clear Primary Name checkbox.
Enter the wallet address.
Click Clear Primary Name.
Confirm the transaction in your wallet.
Wait for confirmation onchain.
Common Questions
What is a Primary Name?
A Primary Name links your wallet to your ENS name, so apps display your ENS name instead of your 0x address. See The Primary Name.
Who can set the Primary Name?
Only the wallet set as the ETH Address can set the Primary Name.
Does setting or clearing a Primary Name require gas?
Yes. You need ETH on Ethereum in your wallet to pay gas fees.
How can I check the Primary Name of an address or ENS name?
In the ENS App, search for an ENS name, open the More tab, and check the Primary Name section. You'll see active Primary Names and their network addresses. You can also search an Ethereum address to check its Primary Name.
Why is my expired name still showing as my Primary Name?
An expired name may still show as your Primary Name because the setting lives in your wallet's reverse record, not in the name registration itself. Use one of the clearing methods above to remove it.
How do I remove my ETH address from my ENS name?
In your name's Profile tab, click Edit Profile, clear the ETH Address field, save, and approve the transaction. See How to Edit Profile.
What's the difference between clearing the Primary Name and removing the ETH Address?
Clearing the Primary Name stops apps from displaying your ENS name when they see your wallet address. Removing the ETH Address stops funds sent to your ENS name from reaching your wallet. These are separate records and can be cleared independently.
