Your primary name is what apps show instead of your 0x123...456 address. For how it works, see Primary name.
In the ENS App, you set it from your Dashboard.
Set it from the Dashboard
Note: setting a primary name is an onchain change, so you need a little ETH for network fees (gas).
Select your address, or your current primary name, in the top-right corner.
Select Dashboard.
Select the arrow next to your primary name. In Choose Primary Name, pick the name you want.
Select Set as primary.
If the name has no wallet address yet, the app says so and offers to add your wallet. Select Confirm.
Approve in your wallet. If the app is also adding the wallet address, approve that first, then the primary name.
When it confirms, the account button in the top-right shows the name you chose.
Show your name on other networks too
The ENS App sets your primary name for Ethereum and for other EVM chains, such as Base or Arbitrum. But your name only shows on a network when the name also points to your wallet there. The ENS App gives the name your ETH Address, and lets you add other EVM chains that use the same address. To cover every other EVM chain at once, add a Default address in ENS Explorer. It is one address used on every EVM chain that has no address of its own. See Set your primary name in ENS Explorer.
Common questions
Didn't registration already set one?
It may have. When you register a name in the ENS App, the payment window has a Set as primary name switch. If it was on, the name you registered became your primary straight after registration. To use a different name, change it from your Dashboard.
Can I set a subname as my primary?
Yes. Subnames you own appear in the same list in your Dashboard.
What if I want to switch primaries later?
You can change your primary name at any time.
