Open the Ownership tab on your name, click Edit Roles, change the role you want, and approve each transaction. Edit Roles updates Owner, Manager, and ETH Address independently — each can point at a different wallet. Gas only.
Before you start — the three roles
A .eth name has three roles, and Edit Roles treats them as independent. Knowing which is which (and which wallet has permission to change which) saves a wallet-switch later.
Role | What it controls |
Owner | The wallet that holds the name's NFT. Can transfer the name, change the Manager, and use Send. |
Manager | The wallet that controls the name's records — it can change the ETH Address, set text records, and so on. Can hand off Manager to another wallet, but can't transfer the Owner. |
ETH Address | The wallet the name points at. Funds sent to |
Quick check before you click: the Manager can change the ETH Address and the Manager. Only the Owner can change the Owner. If the role you want to edit isn't editable in the UI, the wallet you're connected with doesn't have permission for that role — switch wallets first.
For wrapped names, the Manager role is merged into the Owner role on the ERC-1155 token contract — there's no separate Manager field. Subnames have only a Manager, never an Owner.
How to Edit Roles
Open the Ownership tab. Go to app.ens.domains and connect your wallet. Search for your name, then open the Ownership tab and click Edit Roles.
Change the roles. Click Change next to a role, type the new wallet (ENS name or
0xaddress), and repeat for any others. Click Save.
Approve each transaction in your wallet. Click Open Wallet and approve the first. Most confirm in 1–2 blocks (12–24 seconds); busy networks can take longer. Click Next, approve the second, and so on. Order: ETH Address → Manager → Owner.
When all the role transactions land, the new addresses show on the Ownership tab.
Sync Manager — reclaim Manager to the Owner wallet
If the Manager is set to a different wallet than the Owner, the Owner sees a Sync Manager button on the Ownership tab. One transaction sets the Manager back to the Owner's wallet — same outcome as opening Edit Roles and setting Manager to the Owner wallet, just the one-button version.
Go to app.ens.domains, connect the Owner wallet, and open your name's Ownership tab.
Click Sync Manager, read the message, and click Next.
Click Open Wallet and approve.
The button only appears when the Manager and Owner are on different wallets and you're connected with the Owner. Wrapped names don't have a separate Manager, so the button doesn't appear for them either.
Good to know
Each role change is its own transaction. The Edit Roles flow runs them in order: ETH Address → Manager → Owner.
Changing the Owner transfers the name's NFT to the new wallet.
Changing the ETH Address redirects funds — once you change it, funds sent to
yourname.ethgo to the new wallet, and the old wallet stops receiving them.Needs ETH on Ethereum Mainnet for gas — no other cost.
The ENS App only handles
.ethnames and onchain subnames. For project subnames likebase.ethoruni.eth, use the project's own site. See What are project subnames?
Common questions
What's the difference between Edit Roles and Send?
Send moves all three roles to the same wallet in one flow — the usual choice when you're transferring the whole name. Edit Roles lets you set each role to a different wallet independently. Use Edit Roles when you want a split — for example, a cold wallet as Owner, a hot wallet as Manager.
Can I set all roles to the same address?
Yes. Edit Roles can point Owner, Manager, and ETH Address at the same wallet. If you're moving the whole name to a new wallet, Send is the one-flow version of the same outcome.
Can I undo a role change?
There's no Undo button — once a transaction confirms, the role change is on-chain. You can re-edit a role back to the previous wallet, as long as you're connected with a wallet that has permission for that role. The Owner can always reclaim Manager (use Sync Manager); the Manager can reset the ETH Address.
Why can't I change a particular role?
You can only change roles you have permission for. The Manager can change the ETH Address and the Manager. Only the Owner can change the Owner. If a role isn't editable in the UI, switch to the wallet that has permission for that role.
Why don't I have a Manager?
Wrapped names don't have a separate Manager field. For wrapped names, the Manager role is merged into the Owner role on the ERC-1155 token contract. See Name Wrapper Overview. Subnames work the other way — they have only a Manager and no Owner.
Why don't I see the Sync Manager button?
The button only appears when the Manager and Owner are on different wallets and you're connected with the Owner. If they're already on the same wallet, there's nothing to sync. Wrapped names don't have a separate Manager, so the button doesn't appear for them.
