How to Clear the Primary Name

Clearing primary name via the ENS App, or via tools.ens.xyz

Updated this week

There are two ways to clear your primary name. For most users, Option 1 - via the ENS App - is the easiest and recommended approach.

However, if you're trying to clear the primary name from an old wallet, you may need to use Option 2 - via tools.ens.xyz

The primary name set on your old wallet stops working when the ETH Address-record is set to a different wallet, but technically speaking the primary is still set in your wallet.

Guide to Clear the Primary name

Option 1 - via the ENS App

Use this option if the name still has an ETH address record set.

To remove your primary name, follow these steps:

  1. Connect your wallet

  2. Navigate to Settings

  3. Click Remove next to your primary name

  4. Carefully read the confirmation message:

    Remove Primary Name
This name will no longer appear as the name for this address. However, transactions to this name will still resolve to this address unless you remove the ETH record.

  5. Approve the transaction in your wallet

  6. Wait for it to be confirmed onchain

This will remove the primary name associated with the wallet.

Option 2 - via tools.ens.xyz

This option works whether or not the name still has an ETH address record set.

To clear the primary name of a wallet using the ENS tools site:

  1. Navigate to Set ENS Primary Name

  2. Connect your wallet

  3. Tick the Clear Primary Name checkbox

  4. Enter the wallet address

  5. Click Clear Primary Name

  6. Confirm the transaction in your wallet

  7. Wait for it to be confirmed onchain

This will remove the primary name associated with the wallet.

FAQ

Why is my expired name still showing as my primary name?

An expired and unregistered name may still appear as your primary name because the primary name setting is technically set by your wallet. It's not dependent on whether the name is currently registered or active.

How do I remove my ETH address from my ENS name?

In the Profile tab of your name, click Edit Profile, clear the ETH address field, then save and approve the transaction. For more info, see: How to Edit Profile
