Your name is yours until its expiry date, and for a grace period after it: 28 days for an ENSv2 name, 90 days for a name still on ENSv1. At expiry an ENSv2 name stops working, but nobody else can take it during the grace period. Renew in it and the name comes straight back.
Good to know
Anyone can renew a name in grace, but it only ever comes back to its owner. Renewing never changes ownership.
Names not yet upgraded to ENSv2 keep a 90-day grace period. Upgrading to ENSv2 makes it 28 but adds 62 days to the registration: the expiry date moves 62 days later, and the date the name is released doesn't move.
Renewals add time to the expiry date, not to today's date. Days already spent in grace come out of the term you pay for.
What happens during the grace period
An ENSv2 name does not resolve: anything pointing at it stops working until it is renewed. A name still on ENSv1 keeps resolving.
Nobody can register the name, and it cannot be transferred. To transfer it, renew it first.
Anyone can renew it at the standard price, and it returns to its owner.
If nobody renews it, the name goes into Price Cooldown.
Renew a name in grace
Find the name in app.ens.domains and select Renew Name ». The steps are the same as for an active name: see Renew a name.
Common questions
How long can I renew for during grace?
Any length. The time you add goes onto the old expiry date, so to bring the name fully back, renew for longer than the days already spent in grace.
What happens if I miss the grace period?
Anyone can register the name, at first for an extra fee that falls to $0 over 21 days. The previous owner has no priority. See Price Cooldown.
Can I upgrade a name in grace?
No. Only a name with an active registration can be upgraded to ENSv2. Renew it first, from any wallet, then upgrade it.
How do I stop this happening again?
Put your names on one expiry date and renew for several years at a time. See Keep track of your names' expiry dates.
