What is Price Cooldown?
When a .eth name expires and nobody renews it during its grace period, it is released for anyone to register, but for 21 days it costs extra. That window is Price Cooldown (formerly known as temporary premium), and the extra charge is an additional fee.
The additional fee is a one-time charge on top of the normal price. It starts at $100 million and falls to $0 over 21 days, dropping fast at first. Then the name costs the normal price like any other.
For how a name gets here, see .eth name lifecycle and Expiry & grace period.
Common questions
Why does ENS have Price Cooldown?
The high starting fee isn't meant to be paid. It stops bots grabbing valuable names the moment they are released, and lets anyone register when the price suits them.
How do I see the current additional fee for a name?
Search for the name in ENS Explorer: the price it shows includes the current additional fee, and you can register the name there.
Can the old owner get the name back during Price Cooldown?
Only by registering it like anyone else, at the same price. The old owner gets no priority.
Does the multi-year discount apply to the Price Cooldown fee?
No. Only the registration price is discounted.
Does ENSv2 going live on Ethereum reset a Price Cooldown?
No. A Price Cooldown already running carries on with the same timeline.
