What do the search bar statuses mean?

What each label next to a search result in the ENS App means, and what to do next.

When you search on app.ens.domains, most results show a label. The label tells you whether you can register the name, or where to go instead.

At a glance

  • Available: you can register the .eth name.

  • Registered: someone already holds the .eth name.

  • An address shows no label. Select it to open its page.

  • View in Explorer: a DNS name, like example.com. DNS names are handled in ENS Explorer.

  • Name not found: a subname that hasn't been created.

  • Not supported: the name can't be registered. It's too short, or it uses characters ENS doesn't allow.

What does Available mean?

Nobody holds the .eth name, so you can register it. Select it to open the registration page, which shows the price for each term. See Register a .eth name.

What does Registered mean?

Someone already holds the .eth name, so you can't register it. Select it to see its owner and its expiry date. If the owner doesn't renew it, the name goes through a grace period. After that anyone can register it, with an extra fee for the first 21 days (Price Cooldown). See .eth name lifecycle.

A name in its grace period

The name has expired and is in its grace period: 28 days for a name on ENSv2, or 90 days for a name that hasn't been upgraded. The end date works out the same either way. Anyone can still renew it at the normal price, and nobody else can register it.

A name in Price Cooldown

The grace period has ended. For 21 days anyone can register the name, with an extra fee that starts high and falls to $0. See Price Cooldown.

What happens when I search for an address?

An address, like 0xd8dA…6045, shows no label. Select it to open the address's page in the ENS App, which lists the names it holds.

What does View in Explorer mean?

You searched for a DNS name, like example.com. DNS names are handled in ENS Explorer. There you can see whether the name is already in ENS, and import a domain you own. See Import a DNS name.

What does Name not found mean?

You searched for a subname, like pay.yourname.eth, that hasn't been created. The parent name's owner can create it in ENS Explorer, or its Manager if it's an unwrapped name still on ENSv1. See Create a subname in ENS Explorer.

What does Not supported mean?

The name can't be registered. Either it's too short, like ab.eth, or it uses characters ENS doesn't allow, like a space. See What names are allowed?

Common questions

Do I need to type .eth?

No. If you type a name with no ending, like 184, the search looks up 184.eth.

Do capital letters matter?

No. The search turns capitals into lower case, so HELLO.eth finds hello.eth.
