Primary Name Troubleshooting

Identify and fix common Primary Name issues.

Updated over a week ago

Good to Know

  • If your Primary Name shows correctly in the ENS App, it's set correctly β€” display issues on other platforms are on their end

  • Primary Name requires both forward resolution (ETH Address record) and reverse resolution (Primary Name setting) to be configured

  • L2 Primary Names take time to sync: Base, Arbitrum, Optimism ~6 hours; Linea 8–24 hours; Scroll ~1 hour

  • Etherscan does not support DNS-based ENS names as Primary Names

  • You need ETH on Ethereum Mainnet for gas fees when setting or updating Default or Ethereum Primary Name

Primary Name

My Primary Name is not showing.

If your Primary Name is not displaying in apps or wallets, start by checking it in the ENS App.

  • Use the ENS App to check Primary Names: search an ENS name, open the More tab, and view the Primary Name section. If it shows there, it's correctly set.

  • Your Primary Name only displays in apps that support this feature.

Etherscan isn't showing my name.

If your Primary Name isn't showing on Etherscan specifically, this is an Etherscan issue, not an ENS issue. Etherscan is independent of ENS, so we can't directly fix Etherscan-specific issues. Here are some known issues.

  • Weekend Updates Etherscan sometimes run weekend maintenance that temporarily hides primary names or shows outdated ones. If your Primary Name shows on the ENS App, it's working correctly. Check Etherscan again in 2-3 days.

  • DNS imported names Etherscan doesn't support DNS-based ENS names as Primary Names. Your Primary Name works everywhere else that supports ENS β€” just not Etherscan.

OpenSea is not showing my Primary name

If your Primary Name isn't showing on OpenSea, this is an OpenSea issue, not an ENS issue. OpenSea is independent of ENS, so we can't directly fix OpenSea-specific issues.

It wont let me complete the transaction.

If you're unable to complete the Primary Name transaction, you may have insufficient ETH on Ethereum Mainnet for the gas fee.

L2 / Network Primary Names

My Primary Name is not showing.

If your L2 or Network Primary Name is not displaying, check the ENS App first to verify it's set correctly.

  • Use the ENS App to check Primary Names: search an ENS name, open the More tab, and view the Primary Name section. If it shows there, it's correctly set.

  • If you recently set Network addresses, check the status on primary.ens.domains – If it says "syncing" you need to wait for L2 syncing to complete.

  • If you haven't set both forward (address record) and reverse (Primary Name) resolution, the Primary Name will not be active. Check the address records on the name.

  • Your Primary Name only displays in apps that support this feature.

My Default is set but not showing on all chains.

If your Default Primary Name is set but not appearing on all chains, the address records for those chains may be missing.

  • Either you didn't approve the address record transaction, or the records were removed. Add any missing records.

  • Your Primary Name only displays in apps that support this feature.

It wont let me complete the transaction.

If you're unable to complete the L2 Primary Name transaction, you may have insufficient balance on either Ethereum (for the address record) or on the L2 network (for the Primary Name transaction). Ensure you have ETH on both.

I am getting an error.

If you're seeing an error when setting an L2 Primary Name, this usually indicates insufficient balance on Ethereum or the L2 network you're trying to use. Check both and try again.

I can't update my address records.

If you're unable to update address records on your name, check the following:

  • Check you are connected with the wallet that Manages the name.

  • Check you have ETH on Ethereum for the gas-only transaction.

  • You may also need to update your ENS name to use the latest Public Resolver.

"Syncing"

A "Syncing" status means an L2 Primary Name has been set or updated, and the change is propagating to Ethereum. Wait for it to complete.

"Incomplete"

An "Incomplete" status means the Default Primary Name is set, but the matching address record has not been added to the name.
